Taiwan prepares record defense spending due to threat from China.
Taiwan increases defense spending in an attempt to contain the threat from China
According to Bloomberg, next year Taiwan plans to spend a record amount on defense, increasing military spending for the eighth consecutive year. According to the government's proposal, the island plans to spend 647 billion Taiwanese dollars (20.2 billion US dollars), which is 7.7% more than the previous year. This will amount to 2.45% of Taiwan's expected GDP in 2025.
This decision is made to demonstrate commitment to its own security, especially after comments from former US President Donald Trump that Taiwan should pay for its protection from China.
The proposal to increase defense spending is the first since President William Lai took office in May. For its approval, it needs to be voted on in the legislative body, where opposition parties have a slight majority.
In addition, defense spending includes a special budget of 247.2 billion Taiwanese dollars for the next seven years. These funds are intended for the purchase of new fighter jets, most of which will be bought from the USA.
However, there is uncertainty regarding changes in defense spending in the future. The increase in spending in recent years was ensured by a special budget financed by public debt. Analysts note that after 2026, it may be difficult to maintain a similar level of defense spending.
