Ukrainian Leopard 1A5 tanks provided excellent protection against Russian drones

According to Forbes, Ukrainian Leopard 1A5 tanks, which are used in the Ukrainian army brigade, withstood hits from eight FPV drones from Russia before being destroyed.

Ukrainian Leopard 1A5 tanks, due to their thin armor, were reinforced by Ukrainian engineers. They added explosive reactive armor and screens to protect against drones. Thanks to these modifications, the tanks were able to withstand several hits and continued to survive.

'As the first few Leopard 1A5 - out of at least 155 that the consortium promised - are expected to arrive in Ukraine by the end of 2023, Ukrainians immediately began addressing the main issue with the tanks. Over the next year, engineers installed layers of explosive reactive armor that explodes outside upon impact to deflect projectiles. They also attached folding screens covered with mesh that can intercept FPV drones just before impact,' the report states.

Ukrainian Leopard 1A5 tanks demonstrated their effectiveness in battle, surviving hits from 11 Russian drones. Although the tanks continued to move after several hits, they were eventually destroyed. The fate of the crew members remains unknown.

Currently, there are about 90 such tanks in the Ukrainian army, but another 50-60 units are expected. All these tanks will receive additional armor that withstood eight hits from Russian drones.

It was previously reported that Russia will face a tank shortage and production issues by 2025 due to significant losses and problems with manufacturing new equipment.
