Terence Crawford stripped of WBA title two weeks after victory over Alvarez.
Terence Crawford loses WBA title
According to The Sun: Terence Crawford has lost the WBA title just two weeks after victory over Canelo Alvarez in the super welterweight championship fight.
GettyCrawford won the fight against Alvarez by unanimous decision earlier this month in Las Vegas. However, as he informed the WBA of his refusal to return to this weight class, the 37-year-old boxer lost the title.
Consequently, the interim title has gone to Abass Barau, who has been elevated to full world champion.
This news was confirmed by Wasserman Boxing, Barau's promoter, on Sunday.
“Abass Barau is now the full world champion. A place at the table has been confirmed for AB, who would you like to see as his next opponent?”
The German boxer won the interim title by defeating Yoenis Tellez last month.
In the final seconds of that match, he managed to achieve a knockdown, which secured him the victory by unanimous decision.
Now Barau may face his first title defense against former champion Jermell Charlo.
Charlo, the 35-year-old boxer, is the 'champion in recess' according to the WBA and will now become the mandatory challenger.
However, Charlo is negotiating a fight with Errol Spence at the beginning of next year.
