There might be better singers – but they’ll never make a record like me, says Margo Price.
Margo Price: Upholding the Spirit of the Country Music 'Outlaws'
According to The Sun: It’s no surprise that Margo Price embodies the spirit of country music 'outlaws' like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and her close friend Willie Nelson, who continues to delight his fans at 92 years old.
These legends came together to form the supergroup The Highwaymen, but it’s also worth mentioning two women — the fierce Loretta Lynn and Jennings’ widow Jessie Colter.
Like them, Margo is an independent artist who knows how to express her thoughts and reflects their legacy. Although she lives in Nashville, she does not conform to the music city system and values her creative freedom.
Return to Her Roots
Her new album Hard Headed Woman marks a return to her country roots after experimenting with rock in 2023’s Strays. This album evokes memories of her beloved 2016 debut Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, while also taking into account a new decade of life experience.
The recording took place in the historic RCA Studio A in Nashville, renowned for cultural figures like Waylon and Loretta. The album brings Margo together with her original producer Matt Ross-Spang and receives support from alternative country legends Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell.
For me, it’s important to become the best Margo I can be. They say there are better singers, better budgets, but no one can record an album like me, Margo.
Margo discusses her emphasis on songwriting, which is 'raw and with dirt under the nails.'
Victories and Challenges
Her calling is reflected in the song Don’t Let The Bastards Get You Down, co-written with her partner Jeremy Ivey and Rodney Crowell. The song has gained particular recognition thanks to Kris Kristofferson, who used the phrase during a performance with Sinéad O'Connor.
Margo believes these words have become a true anthem in tough times, as 'troubles come slowly, one aspect at a time.' She adds that her song also speaks to those in the music industry, particularly the big corporations and streaming companies that do not always support artists.
Margo's partner — guitarist, songwriter, and father of her children, Jeremy Ivey, has supported her through every stage of her music career.Connections to Country Heritage
The album concludes with a cover of Waylon Jennings' song Kissin’ You Goodbye, recommended to her by his widow Jessie. Margo and Jessie have become good friends, and Margo even produced Jessie’s 2023 album Edge Of Forever.
Margo reflects on how her musical preferences and her conversations with Jessie inspired and supported her creativity. This album embodies the spirit of country, its traditions, and the influence of the great icons who left their mark on music.
Her joy of performing the songs of these legends and continuing their legacy is felt in every track of the new album.
