Majorca at Risk Due to Water Shortage

According to The Sun: The popular tourist resort in the UK is facing the risk of depleting water supplies as tourists continue to flock to the island of Majorca. According to reports, there are just 10 days of water reserves left on Majorca, which will particularly impact the Serra de Tramuntana region of the Balearic Islands.

Impact on Local Residents

This water crisis, reported on Tuesday, will seriously affect the town of Soller – one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Majorca. Authorities note that the water level in wells serving the northwest region has significantly decreased, and no rain is forecasted in the near future.

The mayor of Soller has already held a meeting with the regional water resources director and neighboring mayors to assess the situation. Restrictions on water use have been imposed, including a ban on filling private and public pools. Watering gardens and crops is also prohibited, and residents cannot wash cars, boats, or terraces, except in cases related to health and safety.

All local pools are closed, and beach showers have been turned off. Sports complexes, including the municipal Son Angelats center, have also closed two pools. The neighboring town of Deia has already begun to completely shut off water supply for three days.

Only in August did residents receive water via trucks. If the situation does not change, the authorities in Soller plan to implement similar measures. Cuts for households may begin as early as next week.

Old Water Problems in Winter

The lack of precipitation has reduced the flow of water in the Sa Costera supply system, which serves Soller and Fornalutx. Additionally, the volumes of water leaving the reservoir exceed those entering. This is not the first time that a Spanish summer has faced water shortages and drought conditions. In 2023, a harsh ban on water consumption in Malaga and neighboring regions left local residents and tourists without water.

The restrictions applied to streets, public fountains, showers, and pools, indicating a serious situation that requires urgent action.

In 2022, similar restrictions were also imposed when local authorities turned off beach showers on the famous Costa del Sol coast. These measures affected both residents and tourists.

“This is not an easy decision, considering the tourist season when our beaches are overcrowded,” remarked the mayor of Velez-Malaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer. “We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are facing a critical situation, and any measures that help mitigate the effects of the drought must be taken, starting from the example set by local councils.”

The water situation in Majorca is becoming increasingly critical. The restrictions imposed on water use clearly indicate the seriousness of the crisis. How events will unfold remains to be seen in the coming days, as authorities prepare for possible new measures to address this issue. It is important to stay informed of updates, as they affect not only local residents but also thousands of tourists visiting the island.
