The European Court has issued a ruling regarding the events in Odesa on May 2, 2014

The European Court of Human Rights has made a decision on the claims regarding Ukraine's inaction during the clashes between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian activists in Odesa in 2014. The court found that Russian propaganda largely contributed to the events, but noted that Ukraine also violated its obligations and must pay compensation. The plaintiffs, who lost loved ones and suffered as a result of the conflict, made claims against Ukraine for its inaction. The court also accused the Ukrainian authorities and law enforcement of insufficient protection of citizens and ignoring information about potential riots. Ukraine is to pay compensation to the relatives of the deceased and the injured.

The events in Odesa began after the brutal dispersal of a peaceful protest against the murders of participants of the Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv. Protesters were attacked by pro-Russian forces, leading to clashes and fatalities. After this, a self-defense unit was formed in Odesa, which managed to stabilize the situation by fighting against pro-Russian activists and the fire in the Trade Union House.
