According to ТСН: Ukrainians will be able to observe the third supermoon of this year, known as the Cold Moon, on the night of December 5, 2025.

In 2025, three supermoons are expected: in October, November, and December. The largest of them was the Beaver Moon, which occurred in November.

The Cold Moon will be the second largest supermoon of the year and symbolizes the onset of winter cold and the darkest period.

The coincidence of three supermoons in a row is a rare phenomenon that occurs when the perigee (the closest distance of the Moon to the Earth) coincides with the full moon phase three times. Four consecutive supermoons can only be observed at the beginning of 2026.

Additionally, December is expected to host the second most intense meteor shower of the year — the Geminids.

The thinnest rings of Saturn will also be visible for the next 14 years, as well as the four largest moons of Jupiter.

Impact on Earth: Increased tides and erosion

Astronomers note that supermoons can affect the tides on Earth. Due to the proximity of the Moon to our planet, its gravitational influence is enhanced, causing a rise in tide levels. This is especially noticeable in coastal areas, where water levels can rise, and active soil erosion can occur, especially during storms.

The Cold Moon is a great opportunity for observing nature and astronomical phenomena. The combination of a supermoon with the Geminid meteor shower promises a bright spectacle for astronomy enthusiasts, opening new opportunities for studying the night sky. These unique events remind us of the continuity of cosmic cycles and their impact on our planet.
