Hungary Moves to Unblock Ukraine’s EU Path: Kallas Announces Cluster Openings.
EU Integration Push: Budapest and Berlin Step Up for Ukraine
According to UATV: Hungarian officials are actively working to remove obstacles blocking Ukraine’s European integration and to enable the launch of the first negotiation cluster with Kyiv. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, disclosed this during an informal gathering of EU foreign ministers held in Brussels on May 28.
Kallas expressed optimism that Hungary’s representatives would share positive developments regarding further cluster openings in talks with Ukraine.
“I hope they will bring us good news about the next clusters being opened,” she stated. She also stressed the urgency of accelerating Ukraine’s EU accession process:
“The idea is very good. It means we need to move faster on Ukraine.”
German and Ukrainian Support Strengthens Momentum
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has proposed granting Ukraine a special interim status as an associate EU member, a move that could serve as a significant milestone on the path to full integration. These initiatives reflect growing backing from European partners. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy underscored this point, saying: “Kyiv defends Europe fully, not partially, and not with half-measures.”
Hungary’s efforts, combined with Germany’s backing and Ukraine’s own aspirations, signal a renewed intensity in the dialogue between Kyiv and the European Union.
This development highlights Europe’s increasing focus on Ukraine’s EU integration, a process with far-reaching implications for the region’s political and economic stability. Support from key nations like Germany and Hungary could not only strengthen ties between Ukraine and the EU but also spur the domestic reforms needed to align with European standards.
