"I respect Chuck Schumer. I think he has a great, long career," said Evey, who represents a deep blue district in Maryland near Washington.

This is the farthest current congressional membership that has openly called for Schumer to step aside. His criticism indicates that among Democrats, there is growing disagreement on how to resist Trump's cuts and the effectiveness of Elon Musk’s Department of State.

Congress partner Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) said last weekend: "Senate Democrats need to sit down and think about whether Chuck Schumer is the right person to lead at this Time."

Democratic lawmakers and community representatives have expressed their outrage at Schumer's decision to avoid a government work shutdown by agreeing to vote for the Republican plan that would allow Trump to make more cuts.

Evey, like all but one Democratic House member, voted against the spending plan in the House - a demonstration of unity organized by Minority Leader of the Democratic Party Hakeem Jeffries, which was not upheld in the Senate.

"I think Hakeem Jeffries will continue to gather the Democratic palace together. He has done it again and again with such important laws," said Evey. "If we can ensure that we have the right leadership in the Senate to do this and vote together with House Democrats this time, we can really make an impact."

A lawyer by profession and a patriarch of an influential political family in Prince George’s County, the musician has repeatedly been chanted by people at rallies demanding action on Trump and Musk.

"Answer the questions!" shouted one person from the balcony of the packed audience in the school, as he responded to a question about how to help laid-off federal workers get their jobs back.

Several people mocked Evey: "What are you doing right now!?" as Evey mentioned the legal battles regarding government actions and said that the best time to fight will be during the midterm elections in 2026.

Schumer's criticism followed tough days for the minority leader, as even longtime supporters turned away from him. Former division Speaker Nancy Pelosi complained on Tuesday that he has lost his influence by allowing the vote, even though she still supports him.

Schumer's press secretary did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Evey's remark. However, the minority, which canceled the tour of his book "Antisemitism in America: A Warning" as protests against it were organized, did not take this lightly.

The minority leader stated on Tuesday on MSNBC that while the Republicans' spending plan was terrible, he felt that a government work shutdown would be worse.

"I know that when I made this decision, I was criticized," Schumer said. "I am a smart politician, I know how to read people."

He said that a government work shutdown would harm the country severely. "I couldn't stand that," he said. "I couldn't live with that."
