However, to preserve these qualities, it is essential to follow specific guidelines for harvesting, drying, and storage.

Best Practices for Harvesting and Drying Lavender

For the best results, lavender should be cut on a dry, sunny day, ideally close to midday. This timing helps lock in the plant’s aromatic oils. The ideal harvest stage depends on the intended use. If the lavender is meant for dried bouquets or decorative arrangements, it should be picked when only a few buds on the spike have opened. For applications like tea, cooking, homemade cosmetics, or fragrant sachets, the best time is during the peak blooming period.

Drying lavender requires careful attention to detail. The optimal temperature range for drying is between +20 and +25 °C. The space used for drying must be dark, dry, and well-ventilated. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it destroys the essential oils responsible for the plant’s signature scent. Additionally, bundling lavender into overly large clusters can hinder the drying process and should be avoided.

Several drying methods are effective, including hanging the stems upside down or spreading them out on a flat surface. The drying period typically lasts from 10 to 14 days. If using an electric dehydrator, the temperature must not exceed +35 °C to retain the plant’s beneficial properties.
