Ukrainian Aonishiki Becomes Sekiwake: A New Record in World Sumo.
According to inkorr.com: Danilo Yavgushishin, known as the sumo wrestler Aonishiki, has achieved an incredible success by climbing onto the podium of world sumo and earning the title of Sekiwake—the third-highest rank in this discipline. This occurred in just 13 tournaments, setting a new record since the introduction of the modern sumo system in 1958. The Embassy of Japan in Ukraine celebrated this achievement and wished Danilo success in the upcoming competitions in Kyushu, starting on November 9.
Achievements in Sumo
Aonishiki Arata became the second Ukrainian in professional sumo after Shishi, who began his career in this field in 2020. Competing for the Adigawa team, he achieved an impressive 11 victories in the first five tournaments as a Sekitori and established himself among the best in competitions in July 2025. These successes reflect his high level of training and professionalism.
Success of Young Athletes
On another stage, the Ukrainian national sumo team for boys under 18 in Tallinn amazed everyone by winning a total of 20 medals. This indicates the gradual progress of the discipline in Ukraine and promises a bright future for young talented athletes.
