Americans share a life hack: how to insulate windows cheaply with food film.
According to ТСН: Winter is already here, and the rising prices of heating, as well as the risks of its absence due to shelling, are forcing many Ukrainians to look for unconventional ways to maintain warmth in their homes.
One of the accessible methods shared by Americans online is insulating windows with ordinary food film, which many only use in cooking. Meanwhile, while some invest in expensive double-glazed windows, users find a simple and inexpensive solution.
Problem of heat loss and a cheap solution
It is known that windows serve as the main source of heat loss in a home, as about a third of the heat escapes through the glass. Even the most modern products may begin to let in cold air over time due to worn-out seals or unreliable tightness.
Unlike special and expensive kits for insulation or window replacement, a roll of food film and tape are almost always available in every home and cost very little. This method does not require special skills or tools and is suitable for any surfaces – wooden or plastic windows.
Creating the effect of a 'third glass'
The food film on the windows creates an effect of 'third' glass, serving as an extra barrier between the street and the apartment. It's important to stick it properly – the material should not touch the glass itself. It’s better to stick the film on the window frame or, in the worst case, on the bead.
The air gap between the window and the film not only prevents cold from entering the apartment but also protects the windows from condensation buildup. This method can raise the room temperature by 2-3 degrees Celsius, preventing drafts and mold formation.
How to insulate windows with food film
For this, both regular food film and stretch film for luggage will work. You will need double-sided tape, a utility knife, and an ordinary hair dryer.
Apply strips of double-sided tape around the entire perimeter of the window, securing them to the frame or bead.
Smooth out the film from top to bottom, gradually sticking it to the double-sided tape.
Stretch the film to make it more elastic.
Press the opposite edge to the frame and secure the film, remembering not to let it touch the glass.
Using a hair dryer, heat the film surface until it becomes smooth.
Trim the excess film with a utility knife, being careful not to damage the frame.
With careful sticking and use of a hair dryer, the film becomes practically invisible. Despite its thinness, food film has good thermal insulation properties, which will help significantly reduce heating costs.
This budget method of window insulation has already gained popularity among Ukrainians looking to save on energy during these difficult times. The simplicity and availability of materials make it an ideal solution for many who want to improve comfort in their homes without spending a lot of money.
