The UN High Commissioner calls for accountability for Syrian criminals

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has urged for accountability for those who committed crimes during the regime of the ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad.

According to Reuters, he expressed optimism about the possibility of an inclusive political transition in Syria, noting that initial signs of this process look promising.

'We will need to ensure that those who are responsible for these violations, whether they are from the previous government, the president, or others, are held accountable. Accountability will be a key element of the transitional period because we cannot afford to return to those times of impunity.'
, said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk at a press briefing in Geneva, calling for thorough preservation of evidence.

Currently, Syria is not a member of the International Criminal Court, although a new government may join it.
