Ukraine Considers Lowering Conscription Age to 18: Who Would Be Affected.
Proposed Reduction of Ukraine's Mobilization Age
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine is considering a proposal to reduce the military conscription age to 18 for both young men and women, aiming to build a reliable mobilization reserve. Military experts argue that drafting younger citizens would strengthen the country's defense capabilities amid ongoing challenges. This comes as Ukraine continues to face significant security threats nearly two years into the full-scale conflict.
Under the new plans, recruits would serve in rear areas located in western regions of Ukraine. The following areas have been proposed for stationing new military units:
- Volyn
- Lviv
- Zakarpattia
- Rivne
This approach is designed to provide proper training conditions for young people before they are deployed.
Colonel Yuriy Bereza, commander of the 'Dnipro-1' volunteer battalions, stated: 'Both boys and girls should serve in the military from age 18. Anyone who wants to hold public office must understand: 18 years old means military service. Serve for one year, then continue your education.'
Bereza emphasized that young people need to be prepared for service, adding: 'We must build this mobilization reserve right there. That is precisely our backup.'
Changes to Ukraine's mobilization approach took effect on June 1, highlighting the urgency of this issue given current challenges. The new rules aim not only to increase troop numbers but also to improve their readiness for complex missions.
Lowering the conscription age to 18 could significantly alter the demographic makeup of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and boost youth preparedness for military service. Beyond enhancing defense capacity, this decision reflects the strategic need to adapt military service to modern security conditions, considering the conflict's duration and the challenges facing the nation.
