Adults are Hosting Sleepovers at Friends' Places: Why This is Becoming a Trend.
According to Vox: Tonna Obaze, founder of a consulting firm, finally decided to spend time with her friend Bria despite a tiring week and the desire to stay on the couch. A logical idea emerged: to spend the night in company.
Both worked late on Friday — Bria arrived in athletic wear after finishing her tasks. They rummaged through Obaze's fridge, ordered takeout, and started watching a movie, but hardly made it through the opening credits before talking about various topics: from family to therapy and personal life. Eventually, they fell asleep on the couch, spending the night side by side. Though the friends live in New York, they craved more time to spend together without distractions than just a 90-minute dinner.
“Even tears were on our faces as we, as people entering our late 20s and early 30s, felt the need to return to friendships where we could sit on the couch, eat what's in the fridge, watch movies, and simply enjoy each other’s company without the pressure of time,” says Obaze.
The Loss of Charm
Sleepovers at friends' homes are a youthful ritual that loses its appeal with age. When teens gain more independence, they seek more exciting activities compared to just sleeping at a friend's house. For many who followed the traditional American college path, these years can be seen as one big sleepover encompassing both romantic and platonic relationships. Over time, the choice of where to sleep becomes more a matter of function than pleasure.
However, as the responsibilities of adult life limit time, social sleepovers can become essential. These are not intimate overnights; they are simply a form of communication among friends wanting a deeper connection.
“Extended, focused communication is a much better use of your free time than occasionally visiting a bar,” adds the expert.
Returning to Childhood
Many adults note that it's harder to find and maintain friendships than it was in childhood. The ease of meeting in childhood is related to how much time kids spend together at school and in clubs. Spending time together at parties, sporting events, and sleepovers helps to strengthen bonds.
Modern sleepovers serve similar functions, allowing adults to set aside stress and obligations. Sleepovers can also involve family activities, such as backyard camping with several families during the summer.
Megan Thompson, who hosts sleepovers at her home in Florida, often plays games, sits by the fire, and watches TV with friends as she did in childhood.
“The things that used to connect us with others remain the same as we become adults,” she says.
Intimacy and Banality
These casual activities allow one to forget about pretense and the need to entertain each other. In a society where there is pressure to always be on top, simply coexisting with a friend allows for a new level of intimacy. “We're just here to be together, not to impress,” says Professor Jeffrey Hall.
In fact, sleepovers have no set purpose, allowing friends to just hang out together, which serves as an antidote to constant demands. There’s nothing stopping you from meeting and enjoying simple moments like watching TV or sleeping. “A sleepover has what includes hours spent overnight,” says Hall.
At one of the recent sleepovers, Deandra Kanu and her friend watched TV and just lounged in bed. “It’s a chance to be yourself without the need for entertainment. You are the entertainment,” she says.
“Home is a territory where people feel more comfortable,” adds Obaze.
In today's world, where obligations continuously rise, friendly sleepovers remain a bright example of the importance of human connections. They create an atmosphere of coziness and allow time for sincere communication. Such moments are especially important for maintaining mental and emotional health, as friendship is one of the greatest treasures in adult life.
So, while sleepovers at friends' homes may seem like simple rituals, they are in fact essential moments that help maintain connections within friendships in a stressful world.
