Zelenskyy Outlines Conditions for Ukrainian Elections and His Potential Candidacy.
Elections in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that he does not know when elections will be held in Ukraine. His office later clarified that the context of his remarks was different from initial reports. In a March 3rd interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, Zelenskyy emphasized that organizing elections would require at least a two-month ceasefire from the Russian Federation. The ongoing war with Russia has made the security and stability required for a national vote impossible to guarantee.
Oleksiy Koshel also commented on the situation, stating that work is underway on draft legislation for elections to be held after the war ends. Meanwhile, Serhiy Nagornyak expressed the opinion that parliamentary or presidential elections are unlikely to take place this year.
When can we hold elections? If they take place after the war ends, and not during a temporary ceasefire, I am not at all sure I will run—I will see what Ukrainians want.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
These remarks reflect the broader uncertainty surrounding the future of Ukraine's electoral process. The lack of clear timelines and plans could affect the domestic political landscape and public trust in the government.
The situation regarding elections in Ukraine remains complex, particularly under the conditions of the ongoing conflict with Russia. A key prerequisite for holding elections is stability and security, which currently cannot be guaranteed.
