Science explains why mothers and daughters choose different men.
According to ТСН: Researchers from Wroclaw Medical University have found out why mothers and daughters often fail to agree on the ideal man. It turns out that the criteria for male attractiveness depend on a woman's biological state and her reproductive priorities.
Status versus genetics
More than 120 women aged 19 to 70 participated in the study, evaluating digitally processed images of men. The results showed that young girls generally prefer athletic build and pronounced musculature. Scientists believe this is a subconscious search for good genetics and physical strength to protect the future family.
In contrast, older women, particularly those already in postmenopause, tend to lean towards a slender build and a thick beard. A V-shaped 'duck' figure is rather off-putting to them. A beard is associated with maturity, social status, and reliability—qualities that become more important when fertility is not a pressing issue.
The 'grandmother' effect and changing trends
Researchers call this the 'grandmother hypothesis': as women age, they subconsciously seek a stable partner who is not overly aggressive and can provide resources for family and grandchildren. Excessive muscularity can be perceived as a sign of dominance that hinders a peaceful life.
Interestingly, scientific results are supported by recent surveys. For example, among 2500 British women, seven out of ten admitted that a scruffy Pedro Pascal attracts them more than Zac Efron's perfect abs. Dating experts note that the era of 'abs' is losing popularity, making way for authenticity, maturity, and the mystery that facial hair provides.
It should be noted that a new study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology shows that men prefer shorter women, especially in short-term relationships. At the same time, women remain more consistent in their preferences and always choose men taller than themselves, regardless of the type of relationship.
Thus, this study opens new perspectives in understanding intergenerational preferences regarding partnerships. The identified trends may influence not only personal relationships but also social norms and stereotypes that shape women's views on attractiveness and the role of men in their lives.
