Will Ukraine have to cede territories: Blinken predicted how the front line will change.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken believes that the most important legacy of the Biden administration from Trump is Ukraine, which has stood firm even in difficult times and attempts by Putin to destroy it. He stated this in an interview with The New York Times.
“Well, first of all, what we’ve left behind is Ukraine, which was not a given because Putin’s ambitions were to erase it from the map. We stopped that. Putin has failed. Ukraine stands. And I believe it has exceptional potential not just to survive but to thrive in the future. And that depends on the decisions made by the future administration (of Trump, – ed.) and many other countries,” said Blinken.
When asked if it was Time to end the war in Ukraine, Blinken emphasized that this decision must be made by the Ukrainians themselves.
“They (the Ukrainians, – ed.) need to decide where their future is and how they want to achieve it. I don’t think the current line (of the front, – ed.) will change significantly,” he added.
At the same time, Blinken stressed that the essence is not in territories but in the real situation.
“The front line, as a practical matter in the near future, is unlikely to shift significantly. Ukraine's claims to that territory will always exist. The question is whether they will find ways, with the support of others, to reclaim lost territory. Because it is unlikely that Putin will give up his ambitions,” explained the US Secretary of State.
According to him, if there is a ceasefire, Putin will use it to prepare for new attacks in the future.
“For any ceasefire to truly be durable, it is critically important to ensure that Ukraine has the potential to deter further aggression in the future. And this can take many forms. It can happen through NATO, and we will put Ukraine on a path to NATO membership. It can happen through security guarantees, commitments, and assurances from various countries to make it clear to Russia that if it attacks again, it will face serious problems,” said Antony Blinken.
It should be noted that over the year, Ukraine has lost about 3,600 km² of territory in all directions. In November, the Russians accelerated their advance, occupying 610 km² per month and 20.3 km² per day.
Recently, the invaders have also been actively operating in the Pokrovsk, Kharkiv, and Kupiansk directions, destroying several positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
