Arrests of protest participants after the inauguration of President Mikheil Kavelashvili in Tbilisi

Arrests of protest participants began in Tbilisi after the inauguration of President Mikheil Kavelashvili. His inauguration was not recognized by the Georgian opposition and part of the international partners. Clashes occurred between the police and the protesters near the Georgian Parliament building, who oppose Kavelashvili, the fifth president Salome Zourabichvili, the opposition, and the country's international partners.

Law enforcement, starting the arrests, opened vehicle traffic on Rustaveli Avenue. Protesters hold flags with images of Kavelashvili, Prime Minister Kobakhidze, billionaire Ivanishvili, and inscriptions 'welcome, slave'. The police urged the participants of the rally to move to the sidewalk and not obstruct traffic.

During the clash, one of the protesters was injured and received first aid. The exact number of those arrested is currently unknown. Protesters also came to the Parliament building and showed red cards to the newly elected president.

Reports of harsh arrests and clashes have emerged near the Kashveti Church. Kavelashvili is also not recognized by the opposition and the country's international partners.

The Ukrainian embassy in Tbilisi urged its citizens to be cautious and avoid places of mass gatherings. The American embassy also called for restraint and respect for law enforcement.

The President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, considers Kavelashvili's inauguration a parody and promised to continue the fight against the regime. She considers herself the only legitimate body of the country and stated that she takes legitimacy with her. Kavelashvili was elected president unanimously.
