Ukrainian citizens are advised to be cautious when exchanging currency, especially when exchanging dollar bills.

This was reported by the publication 'Hvylya'.

Experts emphasize that the safest way to exchange is to use official banking institutions where banknotes are thoroughly checked for authenticity. Unofficial exchangers on the streets, markets, or near train stations pose a significant risk of encountering fraudsters and counterfeit bills.

According to the National Bank of Ukraine, the number of counterfeit banknotes increased in the first half of 2024, but this growth is estimated to be moderate. The percentage of counterfeit banknotes stands at about 3.4 counterfeit bills per million genuine ones, which is below the level during wartime (7.1 counterfeits per million).

Among all counterfeit currencies, US dollars are most often counterfeited, especially 100-dollar bills.

Currently, there are two types of hundred-dollar bills on the market:

  • old design, issued before 2013
  • new design, issued after 2013

Main signs of a genuine 100-dollar bill:

  • Watermark - a key security element that is visible when viewed under light and is part of its structure
  • Security holographic ribbon in new banknotes (after 2013) - built into the structure of the bill, not glued on the surface
  • 'Bell in the inkwell' - a special element on new banknotes that changes color when the bill is tilted
  • Paper and printing quality - genuine banknotes are made from dense paper with a distinctive relief
  • Microprinting - small text located all over the surface of the bill, visible upon close inspection

These simple signs can be checked without special equipment - it is enough to carefully examine the bill and check it by touch.

Banks and specialized institutions use more complex verification methods, including the use of special equipment that can detect additional security elements. Thus, exchange at official banks is considered the most reliable due to comprehensive authenticity checks.
