The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed laws extending the martial law period (4220-IX) and mobilization (4221-IX) until May 9, 2025. This is stated on the parliament's website.
On January 15, the Verkhovna Rada supported the extension of martial law and general mobilization in Ukraine for another 90 days. The Rada is making its 14th decision to extend the martial law and general mobilization in the country. Thus, they will be in effect from February 8, 2025, to May 9, 2025.
It should be noted that martial law was introduced in Ukraine back on February 24, 2022, due to the full-scale military aggression of the Russian Federation. It concerns a special legal regime introduced in the country or in certain localities in case of armed aggression or threat of attack, danger to the state independence of Ukraine, its territorial integrity, and provides relevant authorities (military command, military administrations, and local self-government bodies) with the powers necessary to avert threats and repel aggression.
There is also a general mobilization in Ukraine during which conscriptable citizens aged 18 to 60 can be summoned for service if they do not have legal grounds for deferral or exemption from military registration.
In 2024, one day of war cost Ukraine 5.7 billion UAH or $142 million. In total, defense expenditures from the state budget amounted to almost 2.1 trillion UAH or $51.9 billion. At the same Time, in 2025, it is planned to spend 2.2 trillion UAH on defense – over a quarter of GDP.
To replenish the losses of the occupying army in the war against Ukraine, Russia intends to recruit at least 126,000 persons from the so-called “special contingent.” Overall, to replace the losses of existing military units in the war against Ukraine, the Kremlin intends to mobilize at least 280,000 people in 2025.
