The Ukrainian national football team is celebrating its 33rd anniversary since its first match. This happened on April 29, 1992. The meeting took place in Uzhhorod, as this location was chosen for geographical reasons. This match was special because it took place after gaining the status of a temporary member of FIFA and UEFA. Initially, the head coach of the team was supposed to be Valeriy Lobanovskyi, but he declined due to an existing contract. Therefore, Viktor Prokopenko was appointed as head coach. The preliminary preparation for the game was minimal; the team arrived from Kyiv to Uzhhorod by boat, which affected its performance. At halftime, the score was zero: zero, but after the break, the Hungarians managed to score three goals, while the Ukrainians made one goal. As a result, the match ended with a score of 1:3 in favor of Hungary. The 'Avangard' stadium was filled with spectators, and a ticket for the match cost 50 karbovantsiv. Although the team lost its debut match, it demonstrated its great potential and ability to compete at an international level.
