Potato Peels for Chimney Cleaning: An Old Method Against Soot.
Preparation for the Heating Season
According to ТСН: The start of the heating season requires not only a stock of firewood but also knowledge about proper care for the stove or fireplace. Soot in the chimney is not only a problem of poor draft but also a serious fire safety threat. To ensure better burning of firewood and keep the pipe clean, there is a simple and tried method — just one small addition to the stove.
Eco-Friendly Method for Fighting Soot
We're talking about potato peels. This old eco-friendly method helps get rid of soot and prolongs the burning time of firewood. The secret lies in the starch: during combustion, it is released along with the steam and, rising through the chimney, softens the soot, making it easier to remove.
Instructions for Using Potato Peels
To use this method, you will need about half a bucket of dry potato peels — too moist may extinguish the flame. First, light the stove in the usual way and wait until the firewood is burning well because the potato peels only start to work at high temperatures.
Then pour the peels directly onto the hot firewood, close the door and do not open it for 15-20 minutes, allowing the steam with starch to rise into the chimney and do its job. After the process is complete, tap the pipe — the soft soot will fall off the walls, and your chimney will once again be clean and safe.
This method is not only effective but also eco-friendly as it uses what is usually thrown away. Neglecting chimney maintenance can become dangerous, so it is important not to forget regular cleaning. Using potato peels can be a simple and affordable solution that makes the heating season easier for many Ukrainians.
