The Economist decoded its cover-riddle: what awaits the world in 2026.

The Economist rebus about 2026
The Economist rebus about 2026

According to ТСН: Every year, The Economist publishes a cover that is perceived as a riddle with forecasts for the next 12 months. This year, one can see many strange elements: Vikings, a game controller connected to a brain, a cargo ship, as well as medications and syringes. Among global leaders on the cover is President Zelensky.

Economic and political analyst Anatoly Amelin in his column tried to decipher the symbolism of the cover. He notes that the central element of the riddle is a planet in the shape of a soccer ball, which may indicate not only the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico but also the idea that 'the whole world is a game' in which someone is manipulating.

“Look at the football player in the lower right corner - he is outside the main chaos, he is an external player who is kicking the planet. Who is this? China? Global capital? Those who remain behind the scenes?”

Anatoly Amelin highlighted three main colors on the cover and their meaning: red symbolizes danger and conflicts; blue - technology and order; black - neutrality. According to him, the dominance of red is a worrying sign.

“The West is in decline, the East is on the rise - this is not conspiracy, this is what they show us directly,”
he asserts.

Division in the USA

Amelin drew attention to the cake with the number “250,” which symbolizes the 250th anniversary of American independence, to be celebrated on July 4, 2026. However, this cake looks uncelebratory as it is exploding.

“Confetti is flying in all directions, mixing with rockets and chaos. The cream on the cake may be the 'sweet lie' about American success. And now pay attention: a cargo ship with cannons is firing directly at this cake. External forces are targeting the very idea of the American jubilee. Coincidence? You understand that at The Economist, coincidences do not happen,”
the analyst noted.

Another threatening symbol is a large blue fist with the American flag in handcuffs, which may indicate the suppression of internal protests in the USA during Trump's presidency. The crack on the judge's gavel indicates possible destruction of the judicial system.

Dominance of Artificial Intelligence

The image of a human brain connected to a gaming controller also draws attention.

“It can be read literally: Neuralink, neurointerfaces, BCI technologies. And metaphorically: a generation raised on screens, media manipulation, 'programming' through content,”
he noted.

The analyst pointed out that the cover may hint that 2026 will transform artificial intelligence from a tool into infrastructure.

World Leaders

This year’s cover features President Donald Trump as the central figure, as his actions shape chaos in the world.

Putin and Xi Jinping are depicted in the background.

“US protectionism (‘America first’) paradoxically opens the door for China as the new global leader,”
the analyst noted.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is depicted in the upper right corner with binoculars lowered in his hands near a tank.

“This is the image of an observer, not an active player... The Economist shows Ukraine in 2026 this way: exhausted, dependent on external decisions, in a waiting position. Is it a prophecy? A warning? Or an instruction?”

Forecast for the World Economy

The cover also shows a graph reaching a historical low under crossed swords.

“Swords above the graph - the economy has become a battlefield. Tariffs as weaponry, sanctions as shells, supply chains as a frontline. A broken dollar sign. The American currency is cracking. The US national debt is approaching a critical mark,”
adds Anatoly Amelin.

The expert noted that the change of the head of the US Federal Reserve in May 2026 could be a trigger.

Threat of Pandemic?

Amelin drew attention to the images of syringes, pills, and tablets on the cover, noting that the syringes are flying alongside rockets.

“Biotechnology plus AI - this is a new front. Will there be a 'Pandemic 2.0' in the fall of 2026? The cover hints at this,”
he emphasized.

Three Scenarios for 2026

  • Geopolitical drift. Trump escalates, but the USA isolates itself. The war in Ukraine is 'frozen.' The Middle East erupts. China strengthens.

  • Financial storm. Military budget exceeds one trillion dollars and inflation leads to recession. The dollar weakens. Markets fall.

  • New epidemic. Bio-threat - natural or artificial. Lockdowns. Increased control.

What to Expect for Ukrainians

The analyst noted that Ukraine may expect:

  • The war is 'frozen,' but not over; a year of uncertainty, when decisions are made without us.

  • The issue of frozen assets will become critical as money will fall, and the dollar will crack.

  • Prepare for an economic storm as the global recession will hit everyone: exports, currency, investments are at risk.

  • The technological race is an opportunity for Ukraine as we have achievements in drone technology, AI, and cybersecurity.

Main Message

“The old order is cracking. The new is not yet formed. 2026 is not a year of collapse but a year of transformation,”
the analyst sees as the main message of this cover.

The expert emphasized that the previous cover for 2025 was realized by 80%. When such people 'predict' - it is worth listening, as often they do not guess the future, but voice plans.
