After retiring from tennis, he took up golf, gradually reducing his handicap to zero thanks to his competitive nature.
Currently, his level of play is so high that he received an invitation to participate in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championships, which will be held from October 2 to 5.
The 38-year-old Scot will meet participants of the Ryder Cup, Open champions, and green jacket holders of the Masters at three legendary courses in Scotland.
This tournament, with a prize pool of £3.7 million ($5 million), celebrates golf in Links style and allows collaboration between amateurs and professionals.
Competition on iconic courses
The tournament will take place a week after the Ryder Cup at Bethpage, New York, on the Old Course St Andrews, Carnoustie, and Kingsbarns.
Only a few athletes can boast that they have competed at both Wimbledon and St Andrews.
This is not the first time Murray plays in such legendary places – he recently amazed the elite on the 18th hole of the Old Course, hitting exactly from the Valley of Sin.
“I really can’t wait.”
“It’s very special – to be able to play in a full-fledged professional event.”
“For a Scot like me, playing in Scotland at such a unique venue makes it even more special.”
Murray noted that “in many respects, the Old Course at St Andrews is reminiscent of Center Court at Wimbledon.”
“Both have the same historical spirit and atmosphere that is hard to find in many sports arenas around the world. I will enjoy this.”
Murray, who was world number one for 41 weeks, won Wimbledon twice (in 2013 and 2016), clinched the US Open in 2012, secured two Olympic gold medals, and led Great Britain to victory in the Davis Cup ten years ago.
Among the professionals in the tournament are big names such as Matt Fitzpatrick, Padraig Harrington, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Brooks Koepka, Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed, Cam Smith, and Bubba Watson.
Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, and Bob MacIntyre will come from the Ryder Cup to compete for the trophy against American athletes.
Among the show business stars participating in the competition are former Boyzone vocalist Ronan Keating and American rock musician Huey Lewis.
