Newcastle left without strikers: Gordon received a red card in the match against Liverpool

According to The Sun: Anthony Gordon has become a particular problem for Newcastle's attack after he was sent off for a wild foul against Liverpool.

The former Everton player wildly slid into the feet of Virgil van Dijk, with his boot scraping against the captain’s leg during the Premier League match.

Gordon's foul was so bad that it pulled the defender's sock down to his ankle.

Van Dijk showed the back of his thigh, which bore two large scars on the skin from Gordon's studs.

After being sent off, the substitute striker initially saw a yellow card for a harsh foul.

However, after VAR intervention, referee Simon Hooper reviewed the foul and changed the sanction to a red card.

Gordon, who is 24 years old, is now likely to face a THREE MATCH SUSPENSION due to the nature of his dismissal.

Even Newcastle legend Alan Shearer was unimpressed with Gordon's foul and reacted on social media.

He wrote: 'What a stupid tackle, mate. That’s a red card all day long.'

Newcastle's striker issues continue

As a result, head coach Eddie Howe is left with yet another major headache that he was already struggling with.

Newcastle is without a recognized striker after Callum Wilson left, and Alexander Isak continues his stand-off.

Liverpool wants Isak, but the Magpies rejected a £110 million offer back in December.

But the Swedish player remains adamant about his move and has not played this season.

The striker is currently training separately from the main team while a decision is being made.

Newcastle attempted to sign a new striker this summer to bolster Howe's attack.

Newcastle's missed targets

  • Brennan Johnson - moved to Manchester United for £71 million
  • Benjamin Sesko - moved to Manchester United for £74 million
  • Mateus Cunha - moved to Manchester United for £64.5 million
  • Liam Delap - moved to Chelsea for £30 million
  • Giorgio Ekitike - moved to Liverpool for £79 million
  • Jorgen Strand Larsen - Wolves rejected a £50 million offer
  • Mohammed Kudus - moved to Tottenham for £55 million
  • Youan Wissa - Brentford rejected a £40 million offer

Newcastle's main target Giorgio Ekitike was also rejected by Newcastle and instead joined Liverpool.

To make matters worse, the Frenchman doubled Liverpool's lead at St. James' Park early in the second half.

Newcastle also faced a rejection from Wolves in attempts to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen.

They offered £50 million for the striker, but were told he was not for sale.

Another target, Nicolas Jackson, also seems ready to move elsewhere as he has agreed on personal terms with Bayern Munich.

In the match against Liverpool, Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon received a red card for a wild foul against Virgil van Dijk. This worsened the crisis in the team's attack, which already has trouble building attacks due to the absence of key players. Eddie Howe now faces a difficult choice on how to adjust the team's attack without strikers, as well as unsuccessful attempts to sign new players to strengthen the squad.
