Damage to Kyiv's Combined Heat and Power Plants

According to Novyny.live: Russia's overnight attack on February 12 caused significant damage to Kyiv's critical energy infrastructure, specifically at the city's CHP-5 and CHP-6 combined heat and power plants. These facilities, which provide both electricity and central heating, sustained the following damage:

  • At CHP-5, the gas distribution and gas compressor units were hit.
  • At CHP-6, circulating pumps and the water treatment system were destroyed.

Repair crews are now working to restore heating services, with CHP-5 expected to be operational again within 24 hours. The more extensive damage at CHP-6 will require approximately two days to fix. The recovery process has been aided by above-freezing temperatures, which prevented the need to drain the entire heating system—a step that would have added weeks to the timeline.

"Today, Russians attacked with ballistic missiles, and debris hit CHP-5 and CHP-6 in Kyiv. This resulted in damage to the gas distribution and compressor unit at one plant, and at the other, the circulating pumps and water treatment system were smashed. For CHP-5, I hope everything will be restored within a day; for CHP-6, it may take two days."

Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine

Prime Minister Shmyhal added that avoiding a full system drain would save an estimated two weeks of refilling and leak-sealing work, allowing heat to be returned to residents much faster. In response to the situation, authorities also plan to limit power outages for consumers, ensuring no more than three scheduled outage groups are disconnected at any one time.

Strain on Energy Infrastructure

This strike on Kyiv's energy network underscores the persistent vulnerability of Ukraine's civilian infrastructure amid the ongoing war. Restoring heat is a critical priority during the winter months when temperatures can plummet dangerously low. The government's measures to curtail electricity blackouts reflect an effort to maintain a degree of stability for the population despite the relentless campaign of attacks targeting the country's power grid.
