Shocking closure of Butterwick Bakery

According to The Sun: The employees of the Butterwick Bakery chain have faced a heavy blow: almost all establishments, except for two, closed instantly.

The founders of the chain, Fiona and Ryan Scarborough, announced the sudden closure of most establishments on social media. Only two stores will remain open — in the Rushden Lakes shopping park and on Saint Giles Street in Northampton.

The manager of two branches in Market Harborough, Chloe Morrison, noted that the employees were 'shocked' by the news.

“It was very emotionally difficult, I was stunned and completely bewildered,' she said.

Payments for dismissed employees

A representative of Business Recovery and Insolvency ('BRI') reported that in cases where employees find themselves without work due to employer insolvency, the government takes measures to pay them the sums owed.

“We can confirm that amounts owed for unpaid wages, accrued holidays, and compensation will be paid by the Redundancy Payments Service ('RPS'), and the application process will follow these rules,” the statement said.

Affected employees, upon receiving news of their layoffs, felt anxious but received support from Ipera Services Limited, which explained the redundancy process.

The bakery chain operated in Retford, Milton Keynes, and Rugby, as well as in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

Future of the bakeries

The Scarboroughs mentioned that despite the closures, they plan to continue their business, focusing on Rushden and Northampton:

“This is not the end of Butterwick – it is the beginning of an exciting new phase,' they stated.

They promised to improve the menu and bring back popular products.

The closure of most Butterwick Bakery locations has been a significant blow to employees and brand fans. Despite this, the founders emphasize that their story is far from over, and they intend to actively work on updating their offerings and preserving part of the business. It is essential that former employees receive the necessary financial support, which provides some hope for positive changes in their lives after the layoffs.
