Ronnie O'Sullivan – the greatest athlete in Britain: opponent's opinion

According to The Sun: Neil Robertson claims that Ronnie O'Sullivan rightly earns the title of 'Britain's greatest athlete' due to his outstanding performance this summer.

The 43-year-old Australian happily won the final of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters, defeating 'The Rocket' 10-9 and earning a record prize of £500,000.

The final, which took place in Jeddah in August, went to a decisive 19th frame, and Robertson achieved one of the biggest victories in his career by overcoming his 'inspiration' in snooker.

Prior to this, seven-time world champion O'Sullivan, 49, made two breaks of 147 in the semi-final against Chris Wakelin, which was only the second time in the history of professional sports.

Even for an athlete who has set numerous records and won many trophies, this performance in Saudi Arabia became one of the brightest moments at the snooker table.

Support expressed by Robertson

Currently, both players are participating in the third Chinese tournament of the season in Xi'an. Before the trip, Robertson expressed great respect for O'Sullivan for his ability to perform at the highest level despite struggles with alcohol, drugs, depression, and anxiety.

Robertson said: 'Ronnie has returned to his best form.'

“That match (against Wakelin) if it doesn't cement him as Britain's greatest athlete, then I don't know what else can. And to do it at that speed – it's unprecedented.

“We haven't seen anything like it in the game – and it's unlikely we will again.”

“Don't forget, he's battled anxiety disorders – so how he can perform is just amazing.”

“I can't recall any other athlete achieving such heights in their game while battling similar issues. And despite being the most entertaining player, many fans support him. This guy is a true champion.”

Robertson, who is currently ranked third in the world, defeated Irishman Leon Crowley in the first round of the Grand Prix in Xi'an, and then beat Indian Ishpreet Chandu.

Meanwhile, O'Sullivan has already defeated Ukrainian Yulian Boiko and Chinese Yao Penga in the tournament. If both reach the quarter-finals at the Cuiyang Sports Complex, they could meet each other.

The prize in Xi'an is £177,000, and the title is held by world number two Kyren Wilson.

Focus on Ronnie's career

From his lightning breaks to controversial moments with referees, Ronnie O'Sullivan draws attention to snooker.

A seven-time world champion has nearly as massive popularity off the table as on it.

O'Sullivan has three children - two daughters and a son.

His relationship with British actress Laila Rouass, which has had its 'ups and downs', also attracts attention.

He has opened up about his struggles with weight and addictions.

Sometimes, the controversial player believes he wasted nine years of his career due to excessive indulgences.

Despite wealth of £14 million, O'Sullivan is known for his passion for canal boats and disdain for luxury cars.

His rivalry with fellow player Judd Trump has been described as 'the biggest rivalry in snooker'.

Ali Carter felt insults from 'The Rocket' during an incident that became known as 'Snotgate'.

Thus, Ronnie O'Sullivan continues to stay in the spotlight both on and off the table. His successes, battles with personal problems, and popularity shape his image as one of the brightest athletes of modern times. Fans continue to eagerly await new matches involving him, as he is always ready to surprise his supporters.
