Tate Ferdinand makes his debut for Brighton: he plays in his father's position

According to The Sun: The son of Manchester United legend plays for Brighton's under-21 team. 17-year-old Tate Ferdinand is following in his father's footsteps, playing in the same position and even wearing the same number.

Tate plays in central defense and was noticed during a match against Hassocks in the Sussex Transport Senior Cup. The boy showcased excellent performance, helping the team to draw, with the only goal scored by Younes Ibrahim. It is said he 'moves and sounds' just like his father.

The defender also impressed with his ball control skills, making several diagonal passes with his left foot to the right flank.

So, can you guess whose son this is? It is, of course, Rio Ferdinand's son, Tate. Like his father, he wears the number 5 shirt and demonstrates the ability to control defense, as his father is a six-time Premier League champion.

In footage from the match, Tate can be seen maintaining his defensive position before moving forward to make a pass.

He joined Brighton's academy in 2024 and has already played six matches in the youth Premier League this season.

The head coach of the Seagulls' youth team, Bjorn Hamberg, assured that Tate does not let the extra attention from his famous name affect his game.

He stated through The Argus:

“I am confident that this (attention) doesn’t matter to him. Tate Ferdinand is Tate Ferdinand; he needs to play his game and have his own path and career.”
“For us, as a team, he is a huge voice in our dressing room. Of course, he is a leader in defense and is performing very well at the moment.”

Tate is not the only son of Rio making progress in the southeast. 19-year-old Lorenz Ferdinand is also training with the Seagulls and signed his first professional contract with the Premier League club earlier this year.

Rio Ferdinand had an incredible career at the top level of English football. He came through West Ham and made two British transfer records to Leeds United and then to the Red Devils. He brilliantly played under Sir Alex Ferguson during his 12 years at Old Trafford, winning numerous titles.
