Severe Symptoms

Aimi was hospitalized in June with a life-threatening condition caused by her body's response to an infection.

Initially, she noted feeling symptoms similar to mastitis – swelling, fever, and pain in her breasts, which are common in breastfeeding women.

“I remember looking at the nurse in the hospital and saying, 'please don’t let me die tonight.'”

Aimi confessed: “Everyone kept saying it was normal, and I started to feel better. But when we got home, the situation worsened drastically.”

Her breasts became painfully engorged with milk, healthcare professionals offered advice, but nothing helped. After three weeks, Aimi felt unwell: headaches and chills.

She explained: “I also felt tired, but I was a new mom and just tried to endure.”

“After a few days, I still felt bad and realized I had some symptoms of mastitis.”

Rapid Deterioration

Aimi visited a doctor who advised her to continue breastfeeding. She said: “She assured me that it was just excessive milk production. But I couldn’t do that. I felt shame and guilt.”

She added: “I tried to cheer myself up, but it was hard.”

Aimi recalled: “One morning I woke up to feed Charlie, and I was so cold that my whole body was shaking. I felt achy.”

Eventually, Aimi turned to Instagram, received advice from a nurse to seek immediate medical attention. At the hospital, she was given antibiotics and diagnosed with sepsis.

Aimi shared that it was a terrifying experience, and she felt utterly helpless, unable to be with her newborn. She said, “Fearing death in the case of sepsis is very real.”

After four days in the hospital, she was able to return home, but recovery took time.

Recovery and Awareness

Aimi consulted a lactation consultant to reduce milk production as she didn't want to risk recurrent mastitis. She said, “I constantly ask myself why the milk that is supposed to give life almost took mine.”

“I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through, so trust your instincts – you know your body best, and don’t be afraid to speak up.”

Now Aimi is determined to raise awareness about mastitis and sepsis, which nearly claimed her life. She noted, “I truly thought there was no chance of survival. I still can’t believe that something so simple, meant to give life, almost became my end.”

Instagram / @aimeevivian Aimi Vivian urged attention to symptoms during breastfeeding and not to disregard one’s feelings. Her story serves as an important reminder of the dangers that can accompany seemingly ordinary processes like breastfeeding. We hope her experience helps other women stay cautious and listen to their bodies.
