According to ТСН: Many people believe that the refrigerator is the ideal place to store garlic, but this is a common misconception. Experts warn that storing garlic in the cold is not an effective method.

Why the refrigerator is not suitable for storing garlic

Garlic does not withstand low temperatures and high humidity. In the refrigerator, it quickly loses its flavor, becomes soft, and unfit for use. Here are a few reasons:

  • Higher humidity in the chamber promotes mold growth and rapid sprouting of cloves.

  • The cold destroys the oils that give garlic its aroma and medicinal properties.

  • Doctors note that sprouted garlic has a decreased concentration of allicin—the main substance with antibacterial properties. After being in the cold, garlic loses most of its healing qualities.

When can garlic be stored in the refrigerator

There are cases when storing it in the refrigerator is justified:

  • If the garlic is already peeled, it should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for no longer than 2-3 days.

  • Garlic minced through a press or chopped can be stored in a glass jar covered with vegetable oil, preventing air from entering. The shelf life is up to a week.

  • Young garlic should be kept in the vegetable compartment wrapped in paper, but not for longer than 7-10 days.

How to properly store garlic

Experts recommend storing garlic in a dry and cool place, such as a pantry or kitchen cabinet:

  • The optimal storage temperature is around +15 degrees.

  • Garlic should be in a container with good ventilation to avoid moisture and rot. Mesh bags or baskets are ideal for ensuring air exchange.

  • Avoid plastic bags, as condensate forms quickly in them.

Garlic can also be dried, which significantly extends its shelf life and makes usage more convenient. The freezer is suitable for long-term storage—it prevents sprouting. You can freeze whole cloves, sliced pieces, or even garlic paste with oil in ice cube trays. At -18°C, garlic retains most of its beneficial properties, although its texture becomes softer after thawing.

Proper storage of garlic helps keep it fresh and flavorful, enhancing the taste of dishes and preserving its health benefits.

By following the storage recommendations, you can enjoy fresh and aromatic garlic for much longer. This not only improves the quality of your dishes but also enriches your diet with beneficial nutrients.
