Will Russians participate in the Olympics? Answer from the International Biathlon Union.
IBU bans neutral athletes from qualifying for the Olympics 2026
According to inkorr.com: The International Biathlon Union (IBU) has decided not to allow neutral athletes, including athletes from Russia and Belarus, to qualify for the 2026 Olympic Games. This was reported by the IBU press service, citing new competition rules. Consequently, athletes from these countries will not be able to compete in biathlon.
It is worth noting that Russian and Belarusian biathletes have been suspended from international competitions since 2022 due to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. This information was released after the war began when many athletes and officials expressed support for the aggression.
“The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine published new data on Russian athletes who support the war on the War&Sanctions portal in the section 'Champions of Terror'”
The 2026 Olympic Games will take place in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo from February 6 to 22. Thus, Russian and Belarusian athletes will be banned from participating in significant competitions of this tournament.
It should be reminded that the IBU's decision is part of a broader policy of international sports organizations responding to the situation in Ukraine and establishing clear rules regarding the participation of athletes from countries that support aggression. This applies not only to biathlon but also to other sports, as many federations maintain a similar position.Read also
