8 Dangerous Food Additives in the USA: What Is Not in European Products.
According to ТСН: In social media, the popularity of content from bloggers sharing their food preferences and rejecting "typical American food" is rapidly increasing. The reasons for this are not only fashion but also significant differences in food standards between the USA and Europe. In the United States, a number of food additives are allowed that are banned in most EU countries.
This article examines the main differences in food standards between the USA and Europe, as well as additives banned in the EU but allowed in American products.
What Is Allowed in the USA but Banned in the EU
American manufacturers can use at least eight ingredients banned in the European market. Among them:
rBGH — a hormone for increasing milk production in cows, which may cause allergies.
Ractopamine — a growth stimulant for animals associated with the risk of heart disease in humans.
Potassium Bromate — gives bread fluffiness but may cause bronchitis.
Brominated Vegetable Oil — used in soft drinks, may irritate mucous membranes.
Olestra — a fat substitute that may cause bloating and digestive disorders.
Azodicarbonamide — a flour bleaching agent that can cause asthma.
Synthetic Dyes (Red #40 and others) — linked to neurological disorders.
In Europe, these substances are strictly controlled or completely banned.
Why Did This Happen? Different Approaches to Safety
In the USA, food additives are allowed as long as their harm is not proven. In Europe, the approach is completely different: an ingredient can be used only after its safety is confirmed.
This also explains the differences in labeling. The American FDA requires labeling of 8 main allergens, while in Europe — 14. In the USA, caloric content is often listed per serving, while in Europe — per 100 g, which allows for a more accurate assessment of the product's composition.
What Does This Mean for the Consumer
American manufacturers actively use chemical preservatives and hormones to make products look more attractive, colorful, and last longer. In contrast, European regulators focus on reliable safety.
Experts emphasize that this does not mean that one should completely avoid American products, but it is important to carefully read labels and pay attention to the composition.
Food standards in countries are not just a formality, but an important factor that directly affects the health of millions of people.
