CNN: US announces major military aid package for Ukraine, but it will be delayed.
The US government plans to provide significant military aid to Ukraine, but deliveries may be delayed due to Pentagon stockpile issues. CNN reports this with reference to two American officials.
According to the Pentagon, the US has $5.9 billion left under the presidential authority program for the transfer of military property to Ukraine. These authorities end at the end of the fiscal year, in less than two weeks.
The new aid package is expected to include artillery, air defense systems, and other munitions that are critically important for conducting combat operations. The cost of this package will be significantly higher than previous packages, which were about $200 million over the past few months.
Earlier, CNN reported that the US provided Ukraine with smaller military aid packages due to dwindling stockpiles of weapons and equipment that the Pentagon is prepared to transfer to Kyiv from its own reserves.
The US Department of Defense has called on Congress to extend the usage period of the allocated funds. However, prospects dimmed when the House of Representatives failed to pass the temporary funding resolution on Wednesday.
"We intend to use every dollar and cent of these authorities," said Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh in a briefing on Thursday.
The US believes that Ukraine will need at least $500 million a month for the next five years for the transfer of military property, an administration representative noted.
Recall that Australia is also considering transferring retired Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
