5 Winter Mistakes of Gardeners: How to Avoid Damage to Plants

According to ТСН: Winter often creates the illusion that everything in the garden has come to a halt and that there is nothing to do until spring. However, it is during this time that careless actions or even complete inaction can significantly harm plants, lawns, and soil. Gardeners warn that winter mistakes become evident in spring, when correcting them becomes much more complicated.

Care Mistakes for Plants

One of the most common mistakes is leaving potted plants outdoors during frosts. Container plants are especially vulnerable in winter, as their root systems are almost unprotected from the cold. If the temperature drops at night, the substrate in the pots quickly freezes, which can lead to plant death.

To avoid this, specialists recommend moving containers closer to walls or fences, where the wind is less, elevating them off the ground for better moisture drainage, and covering more sensitive plants with special garden fleece. This will help preserve the plants and prevent pots from cracking.

Watering and Decor

Another common mistake is completely refusing to water in winter. Many believe that plants "sleep" in the cold. However, evergreen shrubs like laurel, boxwood, and holly continue to lose moisture even at low temperatures. If the soil dries out, the roots lose the ability to absorb water during sudden freezing.

On warmer winter days, it is necessary to moderately moisten the soil, avoiding both drying out and excess moisture.

Holiday decor can also cause harm. Lights are often tangled around the branches of trees and shrubs without considering the risks. During frosts and strong winds, the wires may stretch, rub against the bark, and damage it. Such injuries become noticeable only in spring, when the plants begin to grow actively.

Specialists recommend placing bulbs freely on the branches and removing decor immediately after the holidays.

Your Lawn

Lawn requires special attention. Walking on frozen or overly wet grass can seriously damage the coverage. In frosts, grass blades become brittle after just a few steps. If the soil is oversaturated with moisture, it deforms under weight, creating depressions that lead to the emergence of weeds in spring.

Therefore, during cold periods, it is recommended to limit the load on the grass cover and use pathways.

Cleaning Fallen Leaves

Do not ignore fallen leaves either. In winter, cleaning is often postponed, but wet leaves can cause the most damage, promoting the development of diseases in flower beds. Regular cleaning, at least once a week, helps to keep the garden in better condition. Leaves do not necessarily need to be thrown away - they can be used to create a pile for leaf mold, which will be a valuable material for mulching and improving soil structure.

Recall that we previously reported that a live Christmas tree is the main symbol of Christmas and New Year for many people. Its unique scent of needles creates a sense of true celebration. However, its beauty has one unfortunate downside: without proper care, the tree quickly sheds and loses its freshness.

The necessity of caring for plants in winter emphasizes the importance of a caring attitude towards the garden, to enjoy its beauty and harvest in spring. By following simple recommendations, you can avoid many problems and keep your green plantings in good condition. So do not procrastinate, take care of your plants and lawn, to soon delight yourself with their smiles in spring!
