Why do Russians kill Ukrainian prisoners of war? Explanation by Lubintsev.
Russia kills Ukrainian prisoners of war to intimidate its own soldiers and to demonstrate disregard for international humanitarian law
This was stated by the Human Rights Commissioner Dmitry Lubintsev in a comment to Radio Liberty.
According to him, the RF is trying to intimidate its soldiers so that they do not surrender. Occupiers convince them that Ukrainians will execute them.
Also, in the opinion of the ombudsman, the Russian side is trying to show the inefficiency of the current system of international humanitarian law.
They did not care about international humanitarian law, about the Geneva Conventions... The Russians are now taking a tactic of destroying the existing international system of humanitarian law, showing that it does not exist. It needs to be changed, and during these changes, they will surely advance their own interests. For example, increasing the number of permanent member countries of the United Nations Security Council from among those countries which support the Russian Federation. And this is very dangerous for all of us-
Lubintsev said.
It should be noted that a video appeared on social networks showing the shooting of two Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Kursk region. This was reported by the authorized representative of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for human rights Dmitry Lubintsev. The Ombudsman emphasized that prisoners of war must always be protected, including from acts of violence. Instead, Russia once again committed a war crime, which is a serious violation of the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law.
In total, law enforcement agencies are investigating 49 criminal cases of the killings of 124 Ukrainian prisoners of war on the battlefield.
Russia's war crimes
As known, in the Donetsk region, occupiers killed six captured fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Earlier it became known that the Russians shot the captured National Guard soldiers near Selydove.
In addition, on the Bakhmut direction, Russian invaders shot, presumably, a wounded serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who fell into their captivity, law enforcement officers started an investigation.
Also, on October 18, in the Donetsk region near Selydove, Russian troops committed another war crime. Ooccupants shot two captured Ukrainian soldiers.
By the way, Russia often returns dismembered bodies of Ukrainian prisoners of war to their relatives, presumably to cover up torture traces.
