Protecting the Winter Garden: How Old CDs Scare Away Birds.
According to ТСН: Gardeners are advised to use old compact discs in their gardens to protect winter plants from birds. This method is especially relevant during the cold season when birds are more actively seeking food and can damage young seedlings.
Winter Plantings and Their Challenges
Many gardeners start winter plantings already in December and January to obtain an earlier harvest of spring crops. During this time, cabbage, lettuce, onions, and green onions can be sown, allowing for fresh greens throughout the year. However, winter plantings often attract the attention of birds.
How Compact Discs Can Protect Plants
That is why gardeners use compact discs as a means of protection. Freely hanging discs move even with a light breeze, and the light reflected from them creates chaotic flashes that scare away birds and prevent them from approaching the beds. This method has proven effective: the shiny surfaces of the discs cause birds to quickly fly away.
Experts recommend placing the discs in a way that allows them to rotate freely and periodically changing their locations. This is important, as birds can get used to a constant source of reflections and return.
Care for Birds in Winter
Gardeners also emphasize that winter is a challenging time for birds, so it is worth helping them in their search for food. It is recommended to feed the birds away from the beds, using feeders or special tables. Nuts, sliced fruits, seeds, and raisins will do. To prevent squirrels from appearing near the feeders in autumn and winter, a bit of chili powder can be added.
This simple yet effective method will not only help preserve plants but also provide birds with extra food in the cold months. Attracting these natural helpers to the garden can be a beneficial solution for any gardener.
