Legendary bass guitarist Danny Thompson has passed away: he played with Kate Bush and The Beatles.
According to The Sun: Legendary bassist Danny Thompson sadly passed away at the age of 86.
Danny, one of the founding members of the British band Pentangle, died peacefully in his home in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, on Tuesday.
GettyThroughout his brilliant career, he collaborated with renowned musicians such as Kate Bush, John Martyn, and Roy Orbison.
Danny gained popularity by playing bass guitar on Cliff Richard's Eurovision song 'Congratulations', which came second in 1968.
In a touching statement from his management team, he was described as 'a unique force of nature'.
The statement read: “A musician who was beloved and respected by all with whom he worked… his creativity is unmatched in quality and incredibly diverse in the musicians he collaborated with.”
“Danny was a force of nature. A player who served the song and enriched the life of everyone he met. He will be greatly missed.”
The musician is survived by his wife Sylvia and son Dan Junior.
Early Years and Career
Danny was born in Teignmouth, Devon, on April 4, 1939. At the age of 16, he played his first professional concert at a club in Soho.
During his music career, he spent two years in Penang, Malaysia, after being conscripted for national service.
After returning to music, he played trombone in the military band.
In 1963, Danny returned to the UK and began playing electric bass with Roy Orbison during a tour supported by The Beatles.
Forming the Pentangle Band
In 1967, Danny founded the folk-rock band Pentangle alongside musicians John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Terry Cox, and Bert Jansch.
One of the band's most popular albums, 'Basket Of Light', was released in 1969 and reached the top 5 in the UK album charts.
Although Danny left the group a few years later, he continued to work with various artists, including writing music for the popular British sci-fi series 'Thunderbirds'.
He also collaborated with jazz musicians Tubby Hayes and Stan Tracey.
Danny worked with such artists as June Tabor, Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
