Vinegar Against Slipping: A Simple Hack for Safe Walking in Winter

According to ТСН: Winter shouldn't be a reason to stay at home, as walks in the fresh air can boost your mood. Slippery sidewalks can be intimidating, but we have a simple and effective secret used by those who enjoy walking during the cold season.

The secret is green table vinegar, which is found in every kitchen. When applied correctly, it can significantly reduce slipping of the sole on ice. Vinegar gently alters the top layer of the material: thanks to this, the sole loses its smoothness and gains a light micro-texture, allowing the footwear to grip better on ice and compacted snow. It's also important that the appearance of the shoe remains unchanged — without stains or damage.

How to Prepare the Sole to Avoid Slipping on Ice

The process will take just a few minutes:

  1. Take a piece of cotton or a cotton pad and apply 2–3 drops of 9% table vinegar on it.

  2. Gently wipe the clean, dry sole with the cotton.

  3. Pay special attention to the toe and heel — these areas most often slip.

  4. Leave the shoes for 2–3 minutes to allow the sole to dry completely.

After that, you can confidently go outside. The sole won't stick, won't leave marks indoors, and won't cause discomfort. On ice, you'll immediately feel the difference: your step will be more assured and your movement stable.

Vinegar is not a moisturizer. It gently removes the factory smoothness and the thin layer of dirt that makes the sole slippery. Therefore, this procedure doesn't need to be done every day — usually once every 7–10 days is enough. The frequency depends on how actively you use the footwear and the surface you're walking on.

Also remember: do not use concentrated vinegar or other types. For this hack, only ordinary 9% table vinegar is suitable.

Despite winter being a stressful season for many, a simple vinegar hack can significantly ease your walks. So don't be afraid of the fresh air — with the right preparations, your winter outings will become safer and more enjoyable.
