According to ТСН: The Stromboli volcano, located on a small island off the north coast of Sicily, is considered one of the most active in the world. Data collected show that for at least two millennia it has been continuously erupting lava.

The first known records of its activity date back to 350 BC. Since then, the volcano has almost continuously displayed short eruptions that create bright orange flashes on the water. Due to this regularity and spectacle, it has been nicknamed the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean.” These eruptions have provided the basis for defining a distinct type of volcanic activity - Strombolian.

Destructive Activity

Although typical eruptions of Stromboli are usually not very powerful, its history has known destructive instances. Between 1910 and 1931, the volcano's activity significantly increased. One of the most tragic moments was the incident on May 22, 1919, when a series of explosions led to large debris falling on the island, causing fires, tsunamis, and the death of four people.

An even larger event occurred on September 11, 1930, when a cloud of ash rose to a height of 2.5 kilometers, and superheated gases rolled into the sea. During this eruption, massive debris fell, including a rock weighing about 30 tons. As a result of this tragedy, six people lost their lives.

Modern Activity of the Volcano

After these destructive events, the volcano fell silent for a short time, but on February 2, 1934, its activity resumed. Since then, Stromboli has continued to erupt, remaining one of the most stable manifestations of volcanic power on Earth.

Recall that researchers first linked the daily rhythm of the Earth with the rhythm of microbial ecosystems. This very synchrony may have led to the oxygen explosion that changed the course of evolution.
