EU Extends Temporary Protection for Ukrainians Until 2028: Who Will Be Denied Entry.
Extension of the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainians
According to Novyny.live: The European Commission has put forward a proposal to extend the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028. This measure aims to provide stability for Ukrainian families currently residing in European Union member states. It is important to note that the extension will not affect Ukrainians who already hold this status and are present in the EU.
A key detail is that newly arriving men subject to military conscription will not be eligible for this status. As European Commission representative Magnus Brunner stated,
“Our proposal stipulates that temporary protection should not be granted to newcomers who are prohibited from leaving Ukraine due to their military obligations.”This means that new arrivals among men who fall under mandatory military service will not gain access to temporary protection within EU countries.
The Situation in Ukraine and Its Impact on the EU
The review and approval of this proposal will take place in the Council of the European Union. Experts estimate that up to 2 million citizens may leave Ukraine, further underscoring the importance of stability for those already in Europe. Magnus Brunner also emphasized,
“nothing changes for those who are already here and receiving temporary protection. For them, nothing changes.”
Therefore, extending the Temporary Protection Directive represents a crucial step in supporting Ukrainian citizens who find themselves in a difficult situation, offering them the necessary level of protection and stability amid a prolonged crisis.
This extension reflects the European Union's commitment to assisting Ukrainians forced to flee their homes due to the military conflict. It also signals the EU's readiness to provide humanitarian aid and foster conditions for integrating Ukrainian refugees into European society. However, denying temporary protection to newly arriving men who are subject to military conscription may create challenges for those attempting to escape the conflict, highlighting the complexity of the situation in Ukraine.
