Poland Says Young Ukrainians Must Defend Their Homeland: What This Means for Refugee Status.
Gerald Knauss Comments on Ukrainian Departures and Refugee Status
According to Espreso.tv: Gerald Knauss, founder of the think tank 'European Stability Initiative' and an EU integration analyst at the European Policy Institute, has weighed in on the issue of Ukrainians leaving the country and their refugee status within the European Union. He noted that Ukraine restricts the departure of men of conscription age, but those with valid legal grounds are permitted to leave. Under Ukrainian law, men of military age cannot exit the country without such justification.
Knauss also emphasized that temporary protection is granted to Ukrainians automatically, signaling that there is no need to apply for asylum.
“Temporary protection is a signal that you do not need to apply for refugee status. You receive this status automatically,”he stated. At the same time, he pointed out that
“in any case, anyone, of any age or gender, can always apply for asylum, and no one takes away that right.”
Statements from Polish Politicians
Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, expressed the view that Ukrainians living in Poland have a duty to defend their own country. According to him, all young Ukrainians in Poland who are fit for military service should be defending their nation from Russia. These comments highlight the importance of supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
The issue of Ukrainians leaving the country and their refugee status in Europe remains a critical topic in the context of the war in Ukraine. The automatic provision of temporary protection demonstrates the EU's readiness to support Ukrainians forced to flee their homes. Meanwhile, the calls from Polish politicians underscore the strong link between the Ukrainian diaspora abroad and the need to defend the homeland, which could shape how Ukrainians view their wartime obligations.
