A court in Madrid has sentenced several Atletico fans who displayed racism towards Real Madrid player Vinicius Junior. Four of them received prison sentences for hanging a doll of the footballer under a bridge before a Copa del Rey match. One of the accused received 15 months in prison plus an additional 7 for hate, while the others received 7 months and fines. Additionally, they are prohibited from approaching Vinicius Junior, visiting stadiums, and communicating with the footballer after their release from prison.
All those responsible apologized to Vinicius, Real Madrid, and sports organizations, which contributed to a reduction in their punishments. Furthermore, they will have to undergo courses on combating discrimination. «This decision is a significant step forward in the fight against racism and intolerance in sports. La Liga is trying to eradicate any manifestations of racism and violence both in stadiums and outside of them,» emphasized a league representative.
