Slovak PM Accuses Ukraine of Blocking 'Druzhba' Oil Pipeline Restoration.
Dispute Over the Druzhba Pipeline
According to UATV: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has asserted that Ukraine lacks the will to restore operations of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline. He further accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of refusing to grant access to an investigative commission tasked with inspecting the conduit. Despite this accusation, Zelenskyy has reportedly agreed to engage in talks aimed at facilitating repairs. The Druzhba pipeline is a critical Soviet-era infrastructure piece for transporting Russian oil to parts of Central Europe.
Fico expressed concern that Ukraine's reluctance to cooperate on this issue could disrupt oil supplies. Slovakia and Hungary jointly proposed sending an inspection team to assess the pipeline's condition, but Ukraine's actions have, according to Fico, cast doubt on its commitment to a collaborative resolution.
Perspectives on Energy Security
In a separate statement, European Commission energy spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen noted that the situation regarding Russian oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia does not currently pose a threat to the European Union's broader energy security. This regional tension highlights the ongoing challenge of disentangling energy dependencies from political conflicts in post-Soviet Europe.
The Druzhba pipeline dispute underscores the complex relations between Ukraine and neighboring nations reliant on Russian energy. Amidst political strain, finding common ground on shared infrastructure is crucial. While the EU Commission suggests the issue is not continent-wide, it carries significant weight for local economies and diplomatic ties in the region.
