According to UATV: On July 22, 2024, Ukraine saw major changes in its armed forces leadership. Mykhailo Drapatyi took over as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, replacing Andriy Hnatov. In addition, Major General Ihor Skybyuk was appointed as the new Chief of the General Staff. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced these changes on July 21, 2024, emphasizing that the appointments aim to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities. This reshuffle comes amid ongoing efforts to modernize Ukraine’s military command structure during a prolonged conflict.

Mykhailo Drapatyi, born on November 21, 1982, in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Khmelnytskyi region, assumed his role as Commander-in-Chief on July 22, 2024. He graduated from the Kharkiv Institute of Tank Forces in 2004 and has been involved in the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine since 2014. Prior to this appointment, from 2021, Drapatyi led the training department of the Operational Command 'North'.

Andriy Hnatov, Drapatyi’s predecessor, noted:

“I am handing over to my successor an army that is not only holding the defense but is also in a state of offense”

Commenting on the leadership changes, Volodymyr Zelensky stated:
