Gareth Southgate may take over Manchester United: who else is on the shortlist.
Gareth Southgate could become the new manager of Manchester United
According to The Sun: Former England national team coach Gareth Southgate is one of the candidates for the managerial position at Manchester United, should Ruben Amorim be fired.
40-year-old Amorim may lose his job after a disappointing start to the season, culminating in a penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby from League Two in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Reuters PAThe Portuguese manager took charge of Manchester United in November last year when the club's new owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, made a significant move. However, less than a year later, his future with the team is in jeopardy due to unsatisfactory results.
The humiliating defeat to Grimsby, a club that is 56 places and three leagues below United, could be the last straw.
Southgate is the bookmakers' favorite for the managerial role at Old Trafford, should Amorim be let go.
At 54, Southgate has been unemployed since resigning as the head coach of the England national team following a loss in the final of Euro 2024 to Spain.
According to bookmakers, Southgate's chances of becoming the next United manager are rated at 5/1.

Southgate recently told SunSport that he enjoys the slower pace of life after leaving his coaching position, working on a book about leadership.
“I don’t know. It’s not something I’m actively looking for at the moment,”
Southgate stated, answering a question about a return to management.
His candidacy for this position, like that of former United star Michael Carrick, is among the favorites according to TalkSPORT bookmakers.
Carrick, who was once a promising young manager at Middlesbrough, has experience at United as an assistant to Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Other candidates for the position also include Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner, whose odds are rated at 8/1, and Mauricio Pochettino, the former Chelsea boss who currently manages the US national team.
The odds for other contenders, such as former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, Fulham manager Marco Silva, and Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola, are rated at 12/1.
The possibility of Gareth Southgate returning to a managerial role has piqued interest not only among Manchester United fans but also within the broader football community. The search for a new head coach could be pivotal for the club's future if the team continues to deliver poor results. It is important to keep an eye on the developments surrounding this situation as team performances may influence the club's management decisions.Read also
