The Tragedy of George Groves in the Ring
George Groves spoke about the personal tragedy that forced him to retire from boxing. He ended his career at the age of 30, after losing to Callum Smith in 2018. But earlier, in 2016, a horrific incident with his opponent Edward Gutknecht, who fell into a coma due to serious injuries, hit him hard.“It was hard to cope,”Groves admits. The tragedy of Gutknecht deeply affected Groves and was a defining factor in his decision to leave professional boxing. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers many boxers face and the importance of safety in the sport. Groves, like many other athletes, faces challenges not only in the ring but also outside of it, and these circumstances shape their future.
