Why Backing Ukraine Matters for Europe’s Safety

According to UATV: Oleksandr Merezhko, who chairs the Verkhovna Rada’s Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, stressed during an appearance on the FREEДОМ TV channel that continued assistance to Ukraine is vital for Europe’s security. He highlighted the roles of NATO and the United States, noting that these allies are prepared to support Ukraine for as long as necessary.

Oleksandr Merezhko: 'There is no fatigue whatsoever, and these states, along with the organization itself, will back Ukraine for as long as it takes.'

He further emphasized that 'the United States is the leader when it comes to the North Atlantic Treaty and the NATO alliance,' making it essential to maintain direct dialogue and reinforce transatlantic solidarity.

Strategic Autonomy and the Upcoming NATO Summit

Merezhko underscored the importance of strategic autonomy but also noted that 'global peace and security depend primarily on collective self-defense, including the role of the United States as a leader and key element of the world security system.' Looking ahead to the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, he remarked that discussions will cover not only continued U.S. support for Ukraine but also ways to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in serious ceasefire negotiations.

In this context, it is worth noting that Donald Trump currently serves as U.S. president, and his stance could significantly shape future decisions on aid to Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains actively involved in security matters and cooperation with international partners. Ensuring stability in the region and sustaining support for Ukraine continue to be pivotal issues for European security.

Recent statements by Oleksandr Merezhko underscore the critical nature of international backing for Ukraine amid growing security threats in Europe. Engagement with NATO and the United States remains indispensable for Ukraine, especially on the eve of the NATO summit, where key security issues and pathways to a peaceful resolution of the conflict with Russia may be addressed. The position of the United States, in particular, will influence not only military aid but also Ukraine’s political support on the global stage.
