Ukraine may be forced to withdraw troops from Donbas: expert on peace negotiation plan.
According to ТСН: Negotiations between the presidents of Ukraine and the United States are gaining significant importance, as the American Congress must ratify security guarantees for Kyiv. In the event of an agreement between Russia and the United States, the Ukrainian side may be offered the withdrawal of troops from Donbas as part of a peace agreement.
This assessment was provided by Ukrainian political scientist Vadym Denysenko, who noted:
“The peace plan: Donbas will be pressured if Putin does not derail the negotiations.”
Security guarantees for Ukraine
Vadym Denysenko emphasized that the advantage of the negotiations is the possibility for Kyiv to receive international security guarantees that will be legally binding, unlike the Budapest Memorandum. He expressed confidence that
“if this is the case – this is indeed a huge plus for us”, but noted that there are currently no detailed specifics.
Ukraine may be forced into territorial concessions
The political scientist pointed out that the new strategy for negotiations is related to the inclusion of Jared Kushner in the process. According to him,
“it seems that this 'everything else' is completely (practically completely) agreed with Ukraine”, after which the Americans plan to discuss the terms with the Russian side. In the event of an agreement, Ukraine may be offered territorial concessions.
Denysenko also noted the strategic flexibility on the part of Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that it is important for him not only to gain territories but also to lift sanctions.
“Putin desperately wants to destroy Ukraine and lives in certain illusions about the fragility of the front”.
Putin will try to buy time
In the expert's opinion, Putin seeks to buy time, hoping for positive changes.
“For how long? The answer is very simple: as long as he can, so as not to quarrel with Trump”, he noted.
Possible exit of Ukraine from Donbas
Denysenko believes that
“if Russia and the United States still come to an agreement, Ukraine will be forced to exit Donbas”, despite the fact that it is currently unclear how this will be presented. He expressed concern that the issue of conducting a referendum may become a priority, although society is divided on this issue.
According to him,
“Trump stated a significant rapprochement towards ending the war”, estimating the finalization of agreements at 95%. Zelensky, in turn, noted that the peace plan consisting of 20 points is 90% approved, with the conditions for military aid and guarantees agreed upon at 100%.
The next round of negotiations between Ukraine and the United States is scheduled for December 29.
These negotiations open new prospects for Ukraine, as obtaining international security guarantees may significantly change the situation in the region. However, the risk of territorial concessions remains, causing concern in Ukrainian society. All this indicates a complex and tense situation that requires careful monitoring of developments.
